Summary of "The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living"

5stars

This book is based on a number of interviews with Dalai Lama where he shares his thoughts on how we can all live a happier life. The American psychiatrist Howard Cutler - who is the author of this book - adds his own perspective and compares the words of Dalai Lama with western psychology.

Cutler wrote this book because he wanted to explore how Dalai Lama can live in such peace and harmony, when so many people in the west are unhappy, even with their high standards of living. Cutler wanted to understand Dalai Lama's way of living and thinking, and to translate this into something that could be used for people in the west who are not buddhists, so that they also could find happiness.

Dalai Lama shares his wisdom that he has reached through many years of Buddhist studies and meditation. He speaks of the importance of compassion and how to control anger and hatred; and also how to cultivate possitive thoughts. Cutler uses his own experience as a psyciatrist and illustrates with different studies, and compares his own way of working with Dalai Lama's way of thinking.

The book is very easy to read and to understand. Cutler has intentionly left out the complex buddhist philosophy that you so often find in other books by Dalai Lama. This is a really interesting book that will make you think about how you live and how you act in different situations. There are also lots of interesting anecdotes and advice that could really help you live a happier life.
